THE BAKERY / SHOP
Since February 2007 the bakery of Chikuni HBC is producing fresh buns and bread nearly
everyday to sell on and it is proving a very successful project.
This IGA has been set up for the team of counselors and a part of the Community
Care Givers, who benefit from the profit they make.
The building also includes a comfortable seating area for 18 people
and a shop, in which the HBC sells various products to fund
raise for itself.
TIE & DYE
The Tie & Dye group is made up of 18 women who were trained to make quality Chitenge
materials. The group meets once a month to create new designs,
which are sold to people in the Chikuni area and prove very popular
when visitors from further a field come to Chikuni.
The women of the group were recently able to open their own
bank account for the profits of the project.
ANIMAL REARING
The Animal Rearing project is like the gardens aiming to improve the living situation of
the PLWHAs, but also the HBC staff is participating. The Project
was initiated in 2005, when seven of their clubs were given
34 goats each and since then the project has seen an increase
of participating clubs. This was possible due to the success
of the seven original PLWHA Groups, who were able to donate
kids to the new ones.
CLUB GARDENS
Seven Clubs of the PLWHAs are participating in the garden project, which was set up
to help improving their food security and provide them with
nutrients that usually wouldn’t be available for them. Initially
all the clubs (at that time 32) were given gardens, but unfortunately
due to drought many of these gardens failed.
A shining example of the project is a garden, which was given
a big permanent piece of land by the traditional leaders, where
a borehole was sunk for them.
