Media Scholars
Radio Chikuni has a group of staff called Media Scholars. Initially
these were called Volunteers, when the idea was first introduced in
year 2000. This internship is only available to immediate school leavers.
The main purpose was to supplement Radio staff employed to run the
station. Other, to look for gifted young local people in the area of
mass communication.
They start from ordinary chores, like cleaning radio promises and surrounding,
filing documents and attending to visitors as receptionists. Apart
from this office orderly kind of work, they eventually go on air, presenting
programmes and producing programmes at the later stage. They go on
an internship period, learning how to use a computer, write radio script,
present a programme and the like. Their title was later, in 2001, changed
to “Media Scholars” from the title “Volunteers”,
because this one-year programme is really a training sponsored by Radio
Chikuni. Yearly, we get around 100 applications of which three girls
and three boys are being chosen after writing a test and attending
an interview.
To those with exceptional talents and gifts in the area of communication,
we look for a scholarship to go to a mass communication college.
Others, with the skills acquired, would be able to use them in various
aspects of their lives and keep an active link with the radio and the
area they live and work.
