The Africa Catholic Radio Script Writing Competition 2003
The Africa Catholic Radio Script Writing Competition 2003
The World Catholic Association for Communication (SIGNIS) in conjunction
with The Pan African Episcopal Committee for Social Communication (CEPACS)
held a script writing competition for all Catholic Radio stations in
Africa. In its zeal to promote justice and development in various ways,
Chikuni Community Radio participated by submitting a story entitled
Behind The Stranger. Initially the story originates from a story called
Masiku Taabanywi Nyama in a Radio story telling programme produced
and presented by Mazuba Mwiinga called Mweenzu Usiya Cisisi . The said
programme ended up into a book compiling all the stories under the
title Mweenzu Usiya Cisisi. This book is yet to be published by The
Mukanzubo Cultural Research Institute.
The story was translated into English by the author and submitted
for the competition and was chosen the best among all the scripts that
were submitted from other African Catholic Radio stations that participated.
The English translation was later developed into a novel highlighting
social justice, cross-cutting issues of culture and religion. The developed
script is lying in the hands of the author waiting for sponsors for
publication.
According to the SIGNIS-CEPACS Jury, the production was chosen as
the best because:
1. Is of high artistic quality.
2. It dramatizes positive human values.
3. The values dramatized can be seen in the light of the message of
the Gospel.
4. It challenges its listeners to respond to its social and justice
dimensions and can be used with groups.
5. It reflects its culture, helping the listeners to respect the language
and symbols of that culture.
The production won a cool cash of US$ 500
